This World Hunger Day our actions are focussing on two key demands:
To the government: Address the cost of living crisis! Finalise and adopt the National Food and Nutrition Security Plan (“the National Food Plan”) before World Food Day in October. Develop an implementation plan, targets and a budget before the end of this year. Act on your promise to reduce child malnutrition. Tell us who are the members of the National Food and Nutrition Security Council (“the National Food Council”) and make sure it meets urgently to discuss high food prices and hunger. In the meantime the UAH is going to set up a National Food Council, made up of leaders from across sectors in our society, to do what government is failing to do.
To Shoprite and other big corporate food retailers:
Recognise the right to sufficient food by: Lowering essential food prices by 20%, especially: milk, amasi, eggs, bread, fruit and vegetables, rice, cooking oil, soya beans. Use your huge profits to pay your workers a living wage, so that they can afford to eat the food that they sell. Reducing executive salaries! This week the UAH encourages all our members and supporters to engage with the media and social media on the issue of hunger.
You are welcome to make up your own messages, slogans, graphics and memes, and also to take actions and organise meetings, as long as you stick to the broad demands and values espoused by the UAH.

Finally, the UAH is totally against xenophobia and victimisation of foreign nationals! Foreigners are not the problem: corruption, low wages, austerity and hunger are. Hunger causes anger and anger leads to desperation and people being vulnerable to manipulation. If we attack hunger we will also reduce xenophobia.
Thank you for standing up for the rights of the hungry!
