Local Organising: No Hungry Child in My Area

The No Hungry Child in My Area campaign, part of the Union Against Hunger (UAH), provides a community-led strategy to eliminate child food poverty within defined local areas. At its heart, it seeks to strengthen and support the incredible efforts particularly single women running community kitchens, stepping in for government failure to realise the constitutional right of all to sufficient nutritious food, particularly for children.

Inspired by historic South African local organising and Marshall Ganz’s organising framework, this campaign offers a flexible organising model for local teams to build leadership, form partnerships, and take direct action.

Key Aspects of the Campaign:

  • Core Mission: Aims to eliminate child hunger—including wasting, stunting, hidden hunger, and obesity—by organizing locally while connecting to broader movement networks.
  • Organizing Model: Focuses on small, localized geographic zones (such as 10 to 20 blocks). Teams build relationships through one-to-one conversations, practice public narrative storytelling, and assign core roles, including coordinators, organizers, resource mappers, and activity leads.
  • First 30 Days Blueprint: Outlines a weekly framework for new teams to map community assets, listen to local needs, set achievable 30-day goals, and regularly review progress.
  • Supporting Infrastructure: Guidance on supporting community kitchens and food gardens by treating them as central organizing hubs while safeguarding organizers from burnout.
  • Solidarity Pairings: Promotes equitable, mutual-support relationships between different organizing teams to share skills, resources, and political solidarity without creating donor-dependent dynamics.

We have run training for our local organising campaigns, including this one, so far in Gauteng (on 29 and 30 July 2026) and will be doing so in all other provinces, starting with the following three. If you are interested, please message us on info@unionagainsthunger.org.
